The 1140 fluid gridsystem

The 1140 fluid gridsystem

Yet another CSS gridsystem. This one has the nice feature that it is fully fluid; sizing down all the way to a mobile version.

Posting it here to make sure I can find it again in the future.

UI patterns combined with CSS

UI patterns combined with CSS

Only one article here but this would be a great idea for a website: not just show pictures of User Interface Design Patterns but also complete html & css examples. I think I’m going to put that one on my 2011 to-do list.

Radical web typography with jQuery

Radical web typography with jQuery

I can’t wait to give this jQuery plugin a try in a project. Combined with @fontface this opens new doors for wed typography. See this page for example.

8pen rethinks the mobile keyboard

8pen rethinks the mobile keyboard

A totally different way of entering text on a mobile touch device. Seems well thought out and makes me wish I had an Android device just to try it.

Check out the video.

Users ignore generic stock photography

Users generic fluffy stock photography

Eyetracking studies by Useit.com find users mostly ignoring stock photography but paying attention to product photography and pictures of real people. Nothing earth-shattering but always good to have some data to back up design decisions.

485 millions users for a site you probably never heard of

485 millions users for a site you probably never heard of

The first two entries in this list of social media sites with the most registered users are pretty predictable. The third one is where things get interesting: tencent.com.

I had never heard of this site but Tencent QQ is the most popular free instant messaging computer program in Mainland China and has about 485 million users.

The lesson here is that the web might be global in reach but it is also still very much a local affair.

Other interesting entries are:

  • 6. Renren.com — a ‘Chinese Facebook’ with 120 million users
  • 11. vkontakte.ru — a ‘Russian Facebook’ with 75 million users
  • 12. Kaixin001.com — another ‘Chinese Facebook’ with 75 million users
  • 14. Mixi.jp — Japanese only social networking site with 27 million users
  • 18. Tuenti.com — ‘Spanish Facebook’ with 8 million users

959 silly Japanese hand drawn animated gifs

959 silly Japanse hand drawn animated gifs

These are just plain silly but if I ever have a project that needs more animated gifs, I certainly know where to get them. I just hope I can convince the client this will be just the authentic Asian-urban-handcrafted edge the project needs.

Awesome clean vector icons

Awesome clean vector icons

At $16,- these icons are a steal. I bought them for a recent project and can’t wait to use them again. As they are set on a pixel grid they scale very cleanly. Much better than other vector icons I have used.

As a proper icon-addict I am also looking for an excuse to buy & use these very pretty Symbolicons icons.

Play Defender in a favicon

Play Defender in a favicon

More of a proof of concept than a usable game, but the fact that this game is played in the 16 by 16 pixel canvas of a favicon is certainly amazing.
